Type 1 | CCCS-NCC | MS66 RB-MS66 RB | Ultra heavy cartwheel frost with balanced lime-green in Reverse centre and gold-red in Rev. periphery. Obverse is mostly gold-red in centre with lime-green frost in periphery. This is one of the prettiest and rarest cents Newcan has ever offered. Newcan has been studying and buying advanced grades of this date for over 40 years. Copper was crucial in the production of ammunition and machinery during and especially toward the end of the Second World War. As the Allied forces began to savour victory; millions of tons of copper lay spent in the form of ammuniton and idle war machinery parts. Allied governments now turned their attention to the distribution of small denomination bronze cent-specie. This pattern of after war production to satisfy face to face commerce can be found throughout history; although the mintage for Canadian 1944 cents was significantly less than required (49% of 1943's mintage and 57% of 1945's mintage) to satisfy the demand for the return of thousands of war weary men and women who wanted nothing more than a job, a family and peace. Trace abnormal composition in blanks from possible British Empire foreign sources and/or indifferent government storage of in hand pre-war blanks would appear to be the norm for 1944 cents - judging by their tendancy to tone very quickly and often with overtones of purple-red, blue, blue-green and gold-red. One cent had considerable buying power in this period and some of the possible British Empire source blanks and/or the supply of stored, pre-war Canadian blanks that may have lain idle during the war years - were now in high demand to be cast as hurry-up cents in Canada's restored country-wide commerce. The production and use of small value coinage to facilitate economies enduring and/or recovering from war is a common occurence throughout world history. During and after many of these recurring large war historical periods, the careful storage of - and precise elemental precision of copper coinage was often; quickly, tossed out the production window to satisfy the immediate and huge demand. Poor quality and aften debased coins were common throughout the centuries during and after times of war and/or pronounced social unrest. Thankfully; for Canadian coin collectors, such was not often the case in Canada - but an exception seems to have occured in the production of Canadian 1944 cents. A very few MS65 Red 1944 Canada cents have surfaced during the last 20 years and I recall about 30 - 35 years ago that one MS65 RED sold that was very close to full orange-red - 100%. The very few certified MS65 - 1944 Red cents that have made it to the market recently may have had 75% - 90% Red; but to the best of my knowledge none have been advertized or sold with a full 100% Orange-red patina on both sides and with absolutely no carbons . I believe there are 2 distinct production and strike types of the Canadian 1944 cents. The type with possible trace elements; which I have arbitrarily labelled as Type 2, has a very heavy strike. It usually displays ultra smooth surfaces with strong spinning carwheel frost and a typically wine-red colouration. Other colours, also present with this type are not uncommon. Some examples of this Type also display a series of raised ridges at the back of the jaw-line - possibly due to trace die-slide, occuring at the coin centre where striking pressure may have been a bit stronger than the surrounding design elements. Also occuring occasionally on Type 2's - a small mole-like bump on the high point of the Queen's cheek; likely caused by a very small indentation or pit on the die. Newcan has been looking for a Type 2 with 100% RED since the early to mid 1980's; but I have never seen one. The other type; which I have labelled as Type 1 has slightly coarser surfaces, likely casued by a softer strike. I have seen one Type 1 that was almost a full orange-red. The discovery of a modest hoard of uncirculated BU penny rolls - originating in Western USA about 45 years ago, contained NO rolls of 1944 to the best of my knowledge. ** | $7,200.00
Type 1 | CCCS-NCC | MS65 RED | 95% Bright orange-red. Premium eye appeal and flashing cartwheel lustre. A true rarity in this pristine condition. ** | $3,750.00

A weak MS65 went in a well known Canadian auction for over $4000 !!! This piece has the typical indicators of a Type 2 - a small mole like bump at the high point of the King's cheek caused by a tiny pit on the die and the small strike-slide stress lines at the back end of the King's jaw. ** | $4,000.00 |

A To Large Denticle | CCCS-ICCS | MS65 RED-MS65 RED | 100% RED. Both the Canadian Certification companies have graded this beauty as MS65 RED and Newcan Coins and Currency grades it as MS65 + FULL RED. A few trace contacts from 66 RED and with great eye appeal. It is worth noting that the Reverse of this 1948 A To is identical to the soft strike on all the 1949 A To cents. Newcan's unproven supposition is that the final 1948 Reverse Die was A To and to eliminate work the same Die was used to produce the early run of A To Denticle 1949's ** | $600.00

A To Denticle | CCCS-NCC | MS66 RD-MS66 RD | EXTREMELY RARE & sure to be a highlight in a CONNOISEUR set of George VI Cents. The only other MS66 RED we know of; went for $14000 Canadian Funds. This piece has the typical Reverse strike that occurs with the 1949 A To Denticle and the 1948 A To Denticle - slightly weak in the centre of the Reverse leaves. Every example of the A To Denticle. 48 & 49 that Newcan has looked during this last 14 years, is the same - ie soft Reverse strike centre of leaves. This characteristic would appear to be a typical feature of these 2 dates only and occurs in all examples; which would indicate that the Reverse Die for 1948 A To Denticle was used in 1949. ** | $15,000.00
